Determining the Problem

Throughout my learning in module 2, I have discovered the importance of creating a well-designed library learning environment. In a well-designed library, there can be areas designated for different functions to create a space that encourages creative thinking. In this assignment, I have identified two specific design problems I became aware of in the library I worked in for one week as a teacher on call.
Problem 1: Teacher resource room is under-utilized
There is a large room off the main library space, connected to the library through a doorway. The room is used to shelve, seasonal books, teacher resources, core competency book collections, seasonal decorations, and multiple book studies for various grade levels.
Reframe: Teachers are unaware of the potential for this room and how the room could be used. Instead of feeling frustrated by the unused floor space in the room off the main library, I can make suggestions for where the books could be stored for easy access for the teaching staff. The book studies could be stored in the book room as they are not part of the catalogue library collection. The seasonal books and materials could be stored in the teacher librarian's office and the core competency book collections could be stored behind the TL’s desk and check out the area on the new shelving. I can then suggest the use of the room; computer lab, iPad use, makerspace, green screen, area for dress-up and dramatic play.
Problem 2: Makerspace materials in library are not visible or accessible to students.
Reframe: To reframe this problem, I will become more aware of ways to organize the library floor plan to incorporate designated areas for makerspace materials where students can easily access the materials. I will create a gallery area/wall to display students' projects and develop a biweekly gallery walk where students use the TAG peer assessment to provide feedback for designs.
I am going to focus on Problem 1: The teacher resource room is under-utilized.
I am going to start with problem 1 because once the materials in the large room are relocated to other areas of the school and shelved in the TL office and behind the check-out desk this room can be used as the library makerspace where all makerspace materials in the library can be organized and easily accessible to students. The TL and the makerspace teacher committee will collaborate to develop the new makerspace location and create a wish list and goals for the space.
